AviationNews – Rocket Lab Corporation has secured its largest launch agreement to date, winning a $266 million multi-launch contract with the U.S. Space Force. The multi-year deal covers 12 suborbital launches—with options for six additional missions—to support critical national security and missile defense test programs.
Awarded by the U.S. Space Force Space Systems Command’s Rocket Systems Launch Program (RSLP) through a competitive bidding process, the landmark agreement expands the aerospace manufacturer’s defense portfolio. Missions under the firm-fixed-price contract will fly primarily from a newly established Rocket Lab location at the Pacific Spaceport Complex-Alaska (PSCA) on Kodiak Island. This northern launch site complements the company’s existing infrastructure at Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand and Launch Complex 2 and 3 at Wallops Island, Virginia. Initial flight operations under the new contract are scheduled to commence no earlier than late 2026 and run through 2028.
Technically, suborbital flight vehicles operate by traveling along parabolic trajectories that reach high altitudes without entering a permanent orbit. This operational profile allows military researchers to conduct hypersonic testing, evaluate sensor technology, and mature ballistic missile defense systems under real spaceflight conditions. By leveraging dedicated launch vehicles derived from its flight-proven suborbital platforms—such as the HASTE (Hypersonic Accelerator Suborbital Test Electron) rocket—Rocket Lab delivers rapid turnaround times and precise target vectors. Utilizing the high-latitude facility in Kodiak enables flexible azimuth access for complex testing corridors over the Pacific Ocean.
