Frankfurt Airport Halts Terminal 2 Operations for Massive €1.5 Billion Modernization Project

AviationNews – Airport operator Fraport officially suspended all passenger operations at Frankfurt Airport’s Terminal 2 on June 9, 2026, launching a major €1.5 billion ($1.73 billion) renovation and modernization program. This temporary closure shifts all flight operations to other facilities, leveraging the newly inaugurated Terminal 3 to absorb traffic and optimize the hub’s long-term capacity.

The extensive makeover comes after more than 30 years of intensive use since the terminal first opened in 1994. While Fraport previously limited updates to minor, non-disruptive projects, the opening of Terminal 3 in April 2026 finally provided the necessary capacity to halt operations for a full-scale overhaul. The multi-billion euro initiative will thoroughly address aging infrastructure that has been heavily utilized by millions of international travelers for three decades.

Technically, the modernization will completely replace core building automation, energy grids, and fire safety systems, alongside upgrading heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) units. Operationally, Fraport aims to streamline the facility by centralizing security checkpoints, optimizing passenger flows, and creating flexible retail areas. Crucially, vital support systems—including aircraft apron positions, the automated baggage conveyor system, the underground parking garage, and the driverless Sky Line people mover—will remain fully operational to preserve seamless terminal connections.

“The terminal’s temporary closure will let us systematically upgrade our airport’s infrastructure while improving its performance and making it more sustainable and comfortable at the same time,” stated Dr. Pierre Dominique Prümm, Fraport AG’s Chief Technical Officer. He emphasized that the modernized facility will serve as a central component of their future hub system, offering state-of-the-art processes and a significantly improved travel experience.

Planners have allocated over three years to draft detailed construction blueprints, with heavy structural work scheduled to begin in 2030. Once the facility reopens in the mid-2030s, it will handle over 10 million passengers annually, providing strong growth prospects for Star Alliance carriers and global airline partners.

Fraport’s €1.5 billion investment ensures that Frankfurt Airport maintains its status as a premier international aviation hub. By shifting traffic seamlessly to Terminal 3, the airport guarantees an efficient travel experience during this multi-year transition. Ultimately, the project paves the way for a highly sustainable, flexible, and high-capacity aviation hub ready for future global demands.
