Aviation News – Airbus Defence and Space has finalized a milestone contract with the international procurement organization OCCAR to develop next-generation tactical capabilities for the French A400M military transport aircraft. The specialized upgrade program will transform the heavy airlifter into an advanced multi-mission platform capable of managing complex combat zones from the sky.
The development agreement was signed on behalf of the French Directorate General of Armaments (DGA) on June 16, 2026. Known officially as the Parallel Mission System (PMS), this high-tech initiative introduces dedicated intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR) capabilities directly into the aircraft’s existing design layout, adapting it for modern electronic battlefields.
The modernization project represents a major tactical shift for the French Air and Space Force, which relies heavily on the four-engine turboprop for logistics and deployment. By introducing these sovereign upgrades, France ensures its transport fleet can actively support front-line air-to-ground operations rather than serving strictly as a cargo vehicle.
The physical upgrades focus on a highly flexible modular configuration, installing dedicated tactical situational awareness consoles inside the main cargo hold. These specialized stations allow personnel to monitor a newly integrated optronic sensor alongside secondary radar feeds, while an open digital architecture permits the crew to seamlessly coordinate drones, ground assets, and fighter jets during active missions.
