Aviation News – Italian defense and aerospace giant Leonardo has secured a major contract from Avincis to supply 15 advanced helicopters, significantly expanding Europe’s critical emergency medical and rescue infrastructure. The massive multi-year agreement reinforces regional emergency networks and ensures long-term capability upgrades for life-saving air operations across the continent.
The aerospace group formalized the agreement on Monday, locking in a delivery timeline spanning from 2028 through 2031. While the companies chose to keep the financial details confidential, the strategic scale of the procurement underscores the deep partnership between the Italian manufacturer and Avincis, which operates as Europe’s largest provider of emergency air services.
The procurement split encompasses two distinct classes of aircraft, specifically ten AW169 light intermediate units and five AW139 intermediate twin-engine helicopters. The deployment planning allocates a dedicated portion of the new fleet to northern Europe, with three of the high-capacity AW139 platforms specifically designated to enter active service within Sweden.
Both aircraft models bring crucial operational flexibility to emergency medical services, search and rescue teams, and disaster response units by pairing robust twin-engine reliability with advanced cockpit avionics. These technical capabilities ensure crews can safely navigate harsh weather conditions, execute precise mountain or maritime rescues, and minimize transit times for critical care patients.

The multi-year delivery schedule positions Avincis to systematically phase out older airframes while scaling up its operational readiness for future medical transport challenges. The successful contract win heavily reinforces the manufacturer’s core financial structure, especially since helicopters have historically been one of Leonardo’s strong points. The dedicated rotorcraft division remains a primary driver of corporate growth, single-handedly accounting for roughly 25% of revenues in the FY 2025 financial period.
