Airbus, Spanish Navy Complete Multi-Domain Drone and Helicopter Tactical Flight Trial

Aviation News – Airbus Helicopters and the Spanish Navy have successfully completed a tactical flight trial in Rota, Spain, demonstrating a new level of coordination between crewed helicopters, uncrewed aerial systems, and naval vessels. The milestone highlights the growing importance of integrated multi-domain operations in modern naval warfare.

The exercise brought together the offshore patrol vessel Rayo, a Spanish Navy H135 helicopter, and two uncrewed aerial systems — the Airbus Flexrotor and Alpha Unmanned Systems’ A900 — connected through Airbus’ HTeaming solution. Conducted earlier this month, the trial was designed to test how manned and unmanned platforms can operate as a single tactical network, accelerating battlefield decision-making and improving operational awareness.

During the demonstration, operators validated the real-time control of the drones while enabling live imagery sharing between the uncrewed aircraft, helicopter, and naval vessel. This created a secure multi-domain operational link, allowing the patrol ship to receive intelligence from well beyond the range of its onboard sensors. The capability significantly extends surveillance reach and improves response speed in maritime missions, including reconnaissance, border security, and threat detection.
