Aviation News – The Pentagon has awarded Lockheed Martin a massive 10-year contract worth up to $1.9 billion to sustain and expand the C-130J Maintenance and Aircrew Training System (MATS). This long-term agreement ensures that U.S. military personnel remain mission-ready through advanced simulation and technical instruction for the world’s most versatile tactical airlifter.

The deal, structured as a sole-source, indefinite delivery, indefinite quantity (IDIQ) contract, allows the U.S. Air Force Life Cycle Management Center to procure a wide array of support services. These include the development of sophisticated courseware, the operation of training devices, and essential engineering services. The partnership continues a nearly three-decade franchise, reinforcing a deep-rooted collaboration between the U.S. Government and Lockheed Martin.

Historically, the MATS program has served as the backbone for various branches, including the Air Mobility Command, Air National Guard, and the U.S. Marine Corps. This latest iteration, known as MATS IV, marks a significant milestone in the program’s development context by broadening its reach. For the first time, training support under this specific contract framework will be extended to include the U.S. Navy Reserve and the U.S. Coast Guard.

Technically, the program utilizes high-fidelity flight simulators and maintenance trainers that replicate the complex systems of the C-130J Super Hercules. These tools provide a safe, cost-effective environment for crews to practice emergency procedures and tactical maneuvers without wearing out operational aircraft. By providing interim and contractor logistics support, Lockheed Martin ensures that these high-tech training systems maintain maximum operational availability.

“This latest contract reaffirms the critical importance of the C-130J MATS program in providing 21st Century Security solutions that support the mission readiness of C-130J operational units across the U.S. military,” said Todd Morar, vice president of Air and Commercial Solutions at Lockheed Martin.

The extended 10-year horizon provides the military with a stable foundation for pilot and maintainer development well into the next decade. As global security challenges evolve, the expansion to the Coast Guard and Navy Reserve ensures a unified standard of excellence across all domestic Super Hercules operators.

Lockheed Martin’s continued stewardship of the C-130J training ecosystem highlights the enduring value of the Super Hercules platform. By integrating the latest engineering services and instructional technologies, the program guarantees that U.S. forces are prepared for diverse global missions. This contract secures the future of tactical airlift proficiency for years to come.
