Airbus H140 Project Gains Momentum as Fleet Expands and Flight Testing Reaches Critical Milestones

AviationNews – Airbus Helicopters has accelerated the development of its H140 light twin-engine helicopter, surpassing significant flight test milestones as the programme moves toward a 2028 entry into service. The versatile aircraft is currently undergoing rigorous environmental testing across Europe and North America to secure global certification.

Following its high-profile unveiling at Verticon 2025, the H140 has rapidly established itself as a market leader, securing over 100 commitments, including 61 firm contracts. The development team, overseen by Dirk Petry, Head of the H135 and H140 Programme, is currently utilizing three active prototypes, with a fourth currently entering the assembly phase. While initial commercial interest was dominated by the emergency medical services (EMS) sector, the manufacturer is now expanding its reach into utility and private passenger transport markets.

The testing campaign recently focused on extreme environmental endurance, with the second prototype completing trials in Finland and Norway. These missions tested the H140 in temperatures as low as -40°C and evaluated engine air intake performance during heavy snowfall. To ensure the helicopter can operate in all global climates, the fleet will transition to the United States this summer for high and hot testing. This phase is critical for verifying component durability and functional reliability in low-density altitude conditions.

“Our flight tests are running exactly according to plan,” stated Dirk Petry. “2026 will truly be the ‘year of testing,’ not just for the prototypes but also across our labs for component and functional verification.”

The programme is now diversifying its mission profiles to include law enforcement and offshore energy support. Furthermore, Airbus has introduced the ACH140 variant, which features a luxury interior designed for private and business aviation. Industrial production of the first serial helicopters is already underway, marking a transition from experimental flight to the establishment of a standardized serial production environment.

Airbus remains firmly on track for the H140’s operational debut in 2028, supported by a robust order book and a successful transition to serial manufacturing. This progress reinforces the helicopter’s status as a pivotal advancement in the light twin-engine aviation sector.
