Mexican Navy Announce 300 Million USD Aviation Expansion

Aviation News – The Mexican Air Force (FAM) and Naval Aviation (SEMAR) have announced a massive fleet modernization, headlined by the purchase of a Lockheed Martin C-130J Super Hercules and 20 specialized aircraft for maritime operations. This strategic expansion aims to bridge critical capability gaps in tactical transport and long-range surveillance across Mexico’s territory.

The Secretariat of National Defense (SEDENA) confirmed that the C-130J Super Hercules is slated for delivery in 2028. This acquisition follows a rigorous technical evaluation at FAMEX 2025, where the air force prioritized logistical continuity and interoperability with international allies. The new airlifter will replace aging units in the 302nd Air Squadron, some of which have been in service for over half a century, ensuring the military can maintain humanitarian and tactical missions.

Simultaneously, the Mexican Navy is moving forward with an ambitious 300 million USD investment. This first tranche of a larger 36-aircraft plan includes ten Cessna 208B EX Grand Caravans, six Bell 412 helicopters, and four Bell 505 units. These assets are specifically chosen to bolster Maritime Patrol, Search and Rescue (SAR), and air ambulance services, providing a versatile response to both security threats and natural disasters.

The technical shift focuses on advanced avionics and high-endurance performance. The Cessna 208B EX offers a range of 2,539 NM, allowing for persistent surveillance over Mexico’s vast exclusive economic zone. Furthermore, the FAM is actively seeking Long-Range UAS capabilities with characteristics similar to the MQ-9 Reaper, aiming to integrate precision weaponry and medium-altitude, long-endurance (MALE) technology into its reconnaissance toolkit.
