Joby Aviation has officially commenced flight testing of its first FAA-conforming aircraft, marking a critical advancement toward Type Inspection Authorization (TIA) and commercial passenger service. This development coincides with a major White House-backed initiative that allows mature eVTOL designs to begin early operations across the United States this year.
The California-based company is currently utilizing its own pilots to conduct initial tests at its Marina facility. These flights serve as the essential precursor for FAA pilots to arrive later in 2026 to perform the rigorous validation required for Type Certification. This milestone follows years of development and positions Joby as a frontrunner in the race to bring electric air taxis to the mainstream market.
In a simultaneous boost for the industry, the U.S. government recently cleared the way for the eVTOL Integration Pilot Program (eIPP). This program provides Joby with a massive operational footprint, granting the opportunity to fly in ten different states, including New York, Texas, and Florida. The integration program is designed to accelerate the timeline for commercial service by testing these aircraft in diverse real-world environments.
From a technical perspective, the conforming aircraft is built to the exact specifications intended for mass production and commercial service. By achieving TIA, Joby validates that its design meets stringent safety and performance standards set by federal regulators.
