AviationNews – Algeria has reportedly officially inducted the first units of the Russian-made Su-57E, marking a historic milestone as the first international operator of the fifth-generation stealth fighter. The delivery, confirmed by recent visual evidence of the aircraft conducting flight operations over North African territory, signals a massive shift in the regional balance of power.
The path to this acquisition began in 2019 when Algerian officials evaluated the export variant during the MAKS air show in Russia. Despite a $2 billion contract for 14 aircraft being shrouded in secrecy, the deal progressed through years of technical refinements and pilot training in Russia. In late 2025, the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) hinted at the delivery of two units to an “unidentified foreign customer,” a claim now seemingly validated by footage of the stealth jet operating near Algerian airbases.
The Su-57E is engineered to provide multi-role capabilities, featuring supercruise, advanced avionics, and a reduced radar cross-section. For the Algerian Air Force, the arrival of these jets represents a leap from traditional fourth-generation platforms to high-end stealth technology. This operational integration follows extensive infrastructure upgrades, including the construction of reinforced hangars designed to house the delicate composite materials of fifth-generation airframes.
“The fifth-generation Su-57 complex is the best aircraft in its class,” stated a representative of the manufacturer during a recent technical briefing. “The fighter has undergone tremendous development, and its capabilities in terms of weapons systems and onboard electronics are constantly being expanded to meet the demands of modern aerial warfare.”
Looking ahead, the successful deployment of the Su-57E may pave the way for further military cooperation between Algiers and Moscow, potentially including additional Su-34 and Su-35 acquisitions.
