Aviation News – Pakistan’s defence community is urging the creation of a homegrown gunship helicopter industry to strengthen self-reliance as regional security pressures grow, a debate sharpened by the recent induction of Chinese-built Z-10ME attack helicopters and concerns over dependence on foreign suppliers.
The call reflects worries that reliance on imports exposes the armed forces to sanctions risks, spare-parts delays, and operational constraints at critical moments.
Pakistan’s evaluation of modern attack helicopters, culminating in the selection and induction of the Z-10ME in the mid-2020s, has underscored both capability gains and structural vulnerabilities tied to overseas sourcing, prompting defence analysts and industry voices to advocate for domestic design, production, and sustainment capacity.
An indigenous gunship helicopter program would allow Pakistan to tailor platforms for high-altitude operations and counterinsurgency missions, ensure secure logistics down to the last bolt, and build a local ecosystem covering avionics, weapons integration, and long-term maintenance.
