Aviation News – Norway plans to firm options for two additional Leonardo AW101 “SAR Queen” helicopters to support the creation of a seventh national search and rescue base, according to proposals unveiled by the justice ministry. The move would strengthen coverage across the country’s demanding maritime and Arctic operating areas, where rapid response can be critical.
The AW101 fleet was originally selected to modernize Norway’s all-weather search and rescue capability, replacing ageing platforms and expanding operational reach. Operated on behalf of the justice ministry, the helicopters are deployed from six bases nationwide, providing 24/7 coverage over land and sea. The newly announced plan would activate existing contract options, effectively bolting additional capacity onto the current programme.
The three-engine AW101 offers long range, high payload, and advanced avionics designed for complex rescue missions in harsh conditions. Its size and power allow crews to conduct long-duration operations, including offshore rescues and mountain missions, while carrying specialized medical and rescue equipment. Adding two more aircraft would improve availability and resilience across the network.
