Aviation News – The French Armament General Directorate (DGA) has awarded Airbus Helicopters and Naval Group a contract to produce six VSR700 uncrewed aerial systems, strengthening the French Navy’s future maritime surveillance capabilities from 2028.
The decision marks a key step in expanding naval intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) operations using rotary-wing drones.
The contract covers the production and delivery of six VSR700 systems in an ISR configuration, selected by the DGA as part of France’s broader effort to modernize naval aviation assets. Airbus Helicopters is responsible for the platform, while Naval Group will manage shipboard integration and combat system connectivity. The systems are scheduled to enter operational service with the French Navy in 2028.
The VSR700 is designed for ship-based operations and will be equipped with a surveillance radar, an electro-optical system, and an Automatic Identification System (AIS) receiver. These sensors enable persistent maritime domain awareness, target detection, and identification, extending the reach of naval vessels without risking crewed aircraft.
A spokesperson for Naval Group said the program “demonstrates how uncrewed systems, fully integrated into ship combat architectures, will play a central role in future naval operations,” highlighting the importance of seamless connectivity via the Steeris® Mission System.
Looking ahead, the VSR700 program signals a growing reliance on uncrewed aviation to support surface combatants, particularly for surveillance and reconnaissance missions in complex maritime environments. The integration of drone systems is expected to enhance operational flexibility and information superiority for the French Navy.
With this contract, France reinforces its position in naval drone development while deepening cooperation between Airbus Helicopters and Naval Group. As the systems approach operational deployment later this decade, the VSR700 is set to become a core asset in French naval aviation and future ISR missions.
