Finland Receives First F-35A as Training Phase Begins in the United States

Aviation News – Finland’s first Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II has arrived at Ebbing Air National Guard Base in Arkansas, marking the start of delivery and training operations in the United States.

The milestone signals a major step in the Finnish Air Force’s transition to fifth-generation combat aircraft and strengthens interoperability with allied forces.

The aircraft, designated JF-501, departed Lockheed Martin’s Fort Worth production facility on January 20, 2026, and was flown to Ebbing Air National Guard Base by U.S. Air Force Major Cole “Laser” Kingsbery. It was formally received by Colonel Tuukka Elonheimo, head of Finland’s F-35 Liaison Office, as Finland begins the practical phase of its F-35 program following years of planning and selection.

The F-35A Lightning II provides advanced sensor fusion, stealth, and networked combat capabilities designed to enhance situational awareness and survivability. Operating the aircraft in the United States allows Finnish pilots and maintainers to train alongside partners, ensuring a bolt-on integration of new tactics and procedures before the jets transition to home bases in Finland.

“This is a historic day for the Finnish Air Force,” Colonel Elonheimo said, calling the arrival of JF-501 a major milestone in the introduction of Finland’s F-35 capability and the official start of deliveries.

The U.S.-based training phase will prepare Finnish personnel for initial operational capability and support the smooth introduction of the aircraft into national service. It also reinforces defense cooperation between Finland and the United States at a time of heightened regional security focus.

With the first aircraft now in hand, Finland’s F-35 program moves from planning to execution. The arrival of JF-501 sets the foundation for fleet growth, pilot proficiency, and long-term modernization of the country’s air combat capability.
