Alaska Airlines and Boeing have finalized the largest aircraft purchase in the carrier’s history, signaling a major shift toward global expansion. The landmark agreement, announced on January 7, 2026, includes a firm order for 105 Boeing 737-10 jets and five 787-10 Dreamliners, aimed at transforming the airline into a formidable international competitor.

This massive capital commitment coincides with the 60th anniversary of the partnership between the two Pacific Northwest giants. The deal brings the airline’s 737 MAX order book to a total of 174 aircraft, while the additional widebody jets will serve as the backbone for a rapidly growing long-haul network. By securing delivery slots through 2035, the carrier is positioning itself to replace aging narrow-body planes and maintain one of the youngest, most efficient fleets in the industry.

The technical core of this expansion rests on the 737-10, the largest variant of the MAX family, which offers the lowest cost per seat of any single-aisle airplane. These jets will handle high-density domestic routes with superior fuel efficiency. Meanwhile, the 787-10 Dreamliners utilize advanced composite materials and aerodynamics to facilitate non-stop flights to Europe and Asia, enabling the airline to reach its goal of serving 12 major international destinations from its Seattle hub by 2030.

“This fleet investment builds on the strong foundation Alaska has created to support steady, scalable and sustained growth,” stated Ben Minicucci, CEO of Alaska Air Group. “These planes will fuel our expansion to more destinations across the globe and ensure our guests travel aboard the newest, most fuel-efficient and state-of-the-art aircraft.”

Looking ahead, this order is the primary engine for the “Alaska Accelerate” strategic plan. Beyond increasing passenger capacity, the move establishes a new 787 pilot base and supports upcoming long-haul routes to cities like London, Rome, and Seoul. For travelers, this means more direct global connections and a modernized cabin experience featuring the airline’s new “Aurora Borealis” inspired livery.

This record-breaking deal cements a long-term future for the carrier as a global player while providing a significant boost to Boeing’s production backlog. As deliveries begin to roll out, the aviation industry will be watching closely to see how this Pacific Northwest alliance reshapes international travel patterns through the next decade.
