Aviation News – Russia has begun flight testing a new engine on its Sukhoi Su-57 fifth-generation fighter, marking a step toward more powerful and efficient propulsion for future variants of the aircraft.
The test flight was confirmed on December 22, 2025, by Russia’s state-owned defense conglomerate Rostec. According to the company, the Su-57 flew for the first time with the new “Product 177” engine, a fifth-generation powerplant developed specifically for advanced combat aircraft, with test pilot Roman Kondratyev at the controls.
The engine program forms part of Russia’s broader effort to enhance the Su-57’s performance and long-term competitiveness. Rostec and the Sukhoi design bureau are seeking to improve thrust, fuel efficiency, and overall reliability as the aircraft continues its gradual entry into operational service and further development.
The Product 177 engine is designed to deliver higher performance while supporting modern combat requirements such as sustained supersonic flight and advanced onboard systems. Improved propulsion is expected to enhance range, payload capability, and maneuverability, tightening the bolt between airframe design and next-generation mission demands.
