Aviation News – Lockheed Martin’s Skunk Works® has completed a successful live test showing how artificial intelligence can autonomously handle mission disruptions in unmanned aircraft, marking a significant step toward more resilient drone operations.
The demonstration used a Stalker XE Block 25 UAV and a modified Alta X 2.0 drone from Drone Amplified to showcase AI-driven mission contingency management. Conducted as part of ongoing development efforts announced this month, the test highlights expanding industry interest in trusted autonomy and adaptive flight systems—a trend often described as a bolt of change for unmanned aviation.
The AI system automatically detected unexpected issues during flight and adjusted the mission without human intervention. This capability is designed to improve operational flexibility, reduce pilot workload, and increase the reliability of missions conducted in complex or rapidly changing environments.
