Aviation News – Electra seeks FAA approval for hybrid-electric EL9 aircraft
Electra has submitted its application to the Federal Aviation Administration for Part 23 type certification of its nine-passenger EL9, a hybrid-electric Ultra Short aircraft designed to serve regional passenger and cargo markets. The move signals a major transition from development to formal regulatory review.
Part 23 certification, which covers aircraft with 19 seats or fewer, is the FAA’s pathway for approving smaller commercial aircraft for passenger and freight operations. Electra’s filing marks a pivotal milestone for the company as it works to bring its EL9 to market and advance hybrid-electric aviation.
The EL9 combines hybrid-electric propulsion with ultra-short takeoff and landing capability, enabling operations from compact airfields while reducing fuel burn and emissions. Its design aims to improve regional mobility by offering efficient, lower-impact flights on short-haul routes.
“Submitting our Part 23 application is a critical step toward bringing the EL9 to commercial service and demonstrating what hybrid-electric technology can deliver for regional aviation,” an Electra spokesperson said.
