Aviation News – Boeing and United trial next-generation communication technology
Boeing and United Airlines have completed flight tests of a modernized data communication system aimed at improving information flow between pilots, air traffic controllers and airline operations. The program seeks to enhance safety and efficiency across increasingly complex airspace.
Conducted in 2025 using a United Boeing 737-8 serving as the year’s ecoDemonstrator Explorer, the trials evaluated new Internet Protocol Suite (IPS) standards. Boeing and United used the aircraft to assess how internet-based communications can streamline decision-making, reduce delays and support more sustainable operations.
The system enables faster, more reliable digital exchanges by replacing legacy communication formats with IP-based connectivity. This approach supports real-time data sharing, potentially lowering fuel burn, easing congestion and improving situational awareness for flight crews.
