Aviation News – Portugal plans to encourage competition between U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets and European-built advanced aircraft as it moves to replace its aging F-16 fleet, the government announced this week.
Defence Minister Nuno Melo said the government aims to maximize strategic, industrial, and economic benefits by evaluating multiple options rather than committing to a single supplier. Portugal’s current F-16s have served for decades, and discussions on their replacement mark a significant step in modernizing the country’s air defense capabilities.
The government will assess the operational performance, lifecycle costs, training requirements, and interoperability of the competing platforms. A structured evaluation process is expected to consider both NATO alignment benefits associated with the F-35 and the potential European industrial collaboration offered by newer EU fighter programs.
“We want the best aircraft for Portugal, but also the best return for our national industry and strategic autonomy,” Melo said. “Creating real competition ensures we secure the most advantageous deal for our armed forces and the country.”
The decision process will continue through the coming months, with Portugal expected to weigh industrial partnerships, maintenance agreements, and regional defense priorities. The move signals a careful balancing act between transatlantic defense ties and deeper European military cooperation.
