Libyan Carrier Buraq Air Commits to 10 Airbus A320neo Jets for Major Fleet Overhaul

AviationNews – Buraq Air, Libya’s first private airline, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Airbus for 10 A320neo Family aircraft, officially becoming a new customer for the European manufacturer and signaling a significant national commitment to fleet modernization. This pivotal investment enhances the carrier’s operational capabilities and secures a key asset for its strategic partner, Medsky Airways, propelling growth in the recovering Libyan aviation sector.

The Memorandum of Understanding for the purchase of the 10 aircraft was finalized and signed at the prestigious Dubai Airshow on November 19, 2025. This commitment represents a major step for Buraq Air, whose current fleet predominantly consists of leased or older-generation aircraft, marking its first direct acquisition of brand-new Airbus jets. The decision to invest in the A320neo Family is central to Buraq Air’s strategy to expand its core network and provide a unified, efficient platform for its strategic partner, Medsky Airways.

The A320neo Family is highly prized for its operational and technical advantages, primarily offering at least a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft. This efficiency stems from its new generation engines and aerodynamic improvements, providing lower operating costs and extended range. These characteristics are essential for Buraq Air to strengthen its domestic and regional routes while maintaining an increasingly crucial commitment to environmental responsibility.

Fouzi Almiqalh, General Assembly President of Buraq Air, underscored the strategic importance of the deal, stating, “This agreement represents a significant step forward for Buraq Air as we continue to modernise our fleet and serve more destinations. The A320neo’s efficiency and flexibility will not only be central to strengthening our core network but will also provide a seamless platform for Medsky Airways, our key strategic partner, to jointly enhance passenger offering across both our carriers.”

The acquisition positions Buraq Air for competitive growth, enabling it to offer enhanced reliability and comfort to passengers while leveraging the efficiency gains of the modern aircraft. As the Libyan aviation sector continues its recovery and stabilization efforts, this major fleet renewal will play a crucial role in reconnecting Libya with regional and international markets, setting a new standard for air travel in the country.

The commitment to 10 Airbus A320neo Family aircraft establishes Buraq Air as a significant player in the Middle East and Africa’s ongoing aviation renaissance. By embracing the latest technology, the airline drives both operational excellence and support for its key strategic partners, laying a strong foundation for long-term growth and stability in Libyan air transport.
