Aviation News – The Dutch Ministry of Defence has chosen Lelystad Airport as the future third home base for the nation’s F-35A fighter jets, aiming to strengthen operational readiness while minimizing regional impact.

The decision positions Lelystad Airport as a permanent Defence location, creating new regional jobs and offering strong accessibility for current and future personnel from the Randstad. According to the ministry, this site causes the least disruption to surrounding residents and wildlife. The expansion requires an estimated 60 to 90 hectares, partly available on existing airport grounds, though additional land outside the perimeter may be needed. Further research will be completed before the government reaches a final decision under the National Programme for Defence Space.

The planned expansion will allow the F-35A fleet to operate from a strategically located, modern base. Additional infrastructure—including storage, maintenance areas, and security zones—will support daily operations and strengthen national air-defence capacity.

A Ministry of Defence spokesperson stated, “Lelystad Airport offers the best balance between operational needs and environmental considerations, making it a crucial choice for the future of our air capabilities.”

In the coming months, detailed studies will refine the land requirements and environmental impact. The findings will guide the final government approval and shape long-term development plans for Defence infrastructure.

The selection of Lelystad Airport signals a significant step in expanding the Netherlands’ air-defence footprint. As research progresses, officials expect greater clarity on timelines, community impact, and integration with existing airport activities, marking an important phase for national security planning.
