Aviation News – The Colombian government and Saab have reached the final stage of negotiations for a deal that will supply 17 JAS39E/F Gripen fighter jets to the Colombian Air Force, marking a major step in the country’s defence renewal.
The agreement follows months of discussions aimed at replacing Colombia’s ageing IAI Kfir fleet, which first entered service in 1989. The Kfirs have faced declining serviceability and rising maintenance costs, prompting the government to accelerate efforts to modernise its combat aviation capabilities.
The Gripen JAS39E/F is a multirole fighter equipped with advanced avionics, efficient engines, and modern weapons systems. Designed for high reliability and reduced operating costs, the aircraft is expected to provide the FAC with significantly improved performance, mission endurance, and operational readiness.
With the agreement poised for signature, Colombia is preparing for a generational shift in its air combat fleet. Training, infrastructure upgrades, and integration planning will follow as the FAC transitions to the new platform.
The decision to procure the Gripen marks a pivotal moment for Colombia’s defence strategy, setting the foundation for enhanced aerial capabilities and greater regional stability. As the new fleet enters service, the FAC is expected to achieve higher reliability, lower lifecycle costs, and better preparedness for future missions.
