AviationNews – The highly anticipated Cessna Citation Ascend midsize business jet has officially made its world debut at the National Business Aviation Association Business Aviation Convention & Exhibition (NBAA-BACE) in Las Vegas. This event marks a major milestone for the aircraft, which is positioned to become the next dominant aircraft in the private jet sector.
The Ascend, manufactured by Textron Aviation, landed at Henderson Executive Airport to lead the company’s static display. The aircraft is the latest and most significant evolution in the popular Citation 560XL series, which includes the successful Citation XLS and XLS+ models. Launched in May 2023, the jet aims to redefine the midsize category and is on track to receive FAA certification and enter service in 2025. Launch customer NetJets has placed a massive order for up to 1,500 Citation aircraft, cementing the Ascend’s foundational market position.
Operationally, the Ascend delivers substantial upgrades over its predecessors, including more fuel-efficient Pratt & Whitney Canada PW545D engines and a redesigned cabin with a flat floor for enhanced passenger comfort—a first for the XLS line. Technically, the flight deck now features the Garmin G5000 avionics suite complete with autothrottles, significantly reducing pilot workload and increasing situational awareness and safety. The maximum cruise speed is targeted at 441 knots, with a range of up to 1,900 nautical miles with four passengers.
Lannie O’Bannion, Textron Aviation Senior Vice President of Global Sales and Flight Operations, emphasized the jet’s market importance, stating, “The Cessna Citation Ascend builds upon more than 20 years of the 560XL series’ success in the market. With the aircraft now making its debut at NBAA-BACE, visitors can see the new Garmin G5000 cockpit and experience the sleek new interior features, which will truly redefine the midsize jet experience.”
The public display signals that the Ascend is nearing its service entry, ensuring the enduring popularity of the Citation family continues well into the next decade. For corporate and fractional operators, the Ascend represents an advanced, high-efficiency tool to meet growing demand for reliable business travel. Interested parties are encouraged to explore the aircraft mockup and performance data at the convention this week.
The debut of the Cessna Citation Ascend at NBAA-BACE confirms its readiness to enter the highly competitive midsize jet market next year. With advanced Garmin avionics, a sophisticated flat-floor cabin, and efficient new engines, the jet is poised to continue the legacy of the Citation 560XL series. Its launch is a major event for Textron Aviation and the global business aviation community, setting a new standard for performance and passenger luxury.
