Aviation News – Italy expands AW249 Fenice helicopter fleet with new €1.22 billion contract

Italy has launched the procurement process for a third batch of Leonardo AW249 Fenice attack helicopters, worth €1.22 billion ($1.41 billion). The move strengthens the Italian Army’s modernization program and reinforces the country’s domestic defense industry.

According to documents submitted by the Italian defence minister for parliamentary approval in mid-October, the order covers 29 additional AW249 helicopters in a full operational capability (FOC) configuration. These will complement the 19 aircraft already on order, ensuring a total of 48 helicopters once deliveries are complete. The acquisition marks a key step in Italy’s long-term plan to replace its aging fleet of AW129 Mangusta helicopters.

The AW249 Fenice, developed by Leonardo, features advanced avionics, mission systems, and digital connectivity designed for multi-role operations. Equipped with improved survivability, higher payload capacity, and modern weapon systems, the aircraft enhances both offensive and reconnaissance capabilities for the Italian Army.
