Aviation News – Germany approves order for 20 extra Eurofighter jets to strengthen long-term air defence
Germany’s budget committee has approved the procurement of 20 additional Eurofighter jets at a cost of approximately €3.75 billion, in a move to bolster the country’s air force capabilities. This decision is part of broader efforts to modernise the Bundeswehr amid rising geopolitical tensions.
The contract—labelled Tranche 5—was confirmed by the defence ministry, with deliveries to begin in 2031 and continue through 2034. According to Member of Parliament Andreas Schwarz (Social Democrats), the jets will play a key role in data collection and electronic warfare.
Technically, the new Eurofighters of Tranche 5 are expected to incorporate modern systems suitable for advanced tasks like surveillance, signal intelligence, and electronic warfare, increasing interoperability with NATO. Their deployment will extend Germany’s operational capabilities well into the 2030s and help maintain the fleet until at least 2060.
“This will ensure the military operational capability of the Eurofighter until 2060,” said Andreas Schwarz, who oversees the budget for the coalition’s Social Democrats.
Looking ahead, this procurement marks a significant step in Germany’s defence strategy, helping to close capability gaps until future systems like the Future Combat Air System (FCAS) are operational. It also sends a strong signal about Berlin’s commitment to maintaining robust air defence within NATO frameworks.
