China’s Massive ‘GJ-X’ Stealth Drone Spotted in First Public Flight

AviationNews – China has marked a significant military milestone with what appears to be the first-ever flight of its massive, new stealth drone, unofficially dubbed the GJ-X. Video footage circulating online provides the first visual confirmation of the secretive aircraft in the air, signaling a major advancement in China’s unmanned combat aviation program.

The GJ-X aircraft, which features a large “cranked-kite” flying-wing design, was first identified in satellite imagery just months ago at China’s sprawling Malan test base in Xinjiang province. This new sighting, however, confirms the program has moved to active test flight status. Analysts estimate the drone boasts an immense wingspan of approximately 42 meters (137 feet), placing it in a rare class of large-scale stealth uncrewed aircraft.

The drone’s specific role remains speculative, but its design offers significant clues. The flying-wing shape is optimized for a low radar cross-section, or stealth. The video footage also revealed a counter-shaded paint scheme on the drone’s underside, a camouflage technique likely intended to make it harder to visually identify its shape at high altitude. Its massive size suggests it could be a long-endurance reconnaissance platform, similar to the rumored U.S. RQ-180, or a potent UCAV (unmanned combat aerial vehicle) designed for deep-penetration strikes.

“The speed at which China is now moving when it comes to advanced combat aircraft development is truly stunning,” one defense analyst noted. Observers are divided on its primary mission, with some asserting it is a “very large UCAV with kinetic operations as its focus,” while others believe a reconnaissance role is more probable.

The public emergence of the GJ-X is the latest in a rapid series of advanced aircraft developments by China, including new crewed and uncrewed stealth fighters. This test flight confirms that China is actively closing the technology gap with the United States in a developing arms race focused on autonomous systems and low-observability.

The GJ-X’s first flight moves this secretive project from a ground-based prototype to a tangible, active development program. The existence of such a large, seemingly sophisticated stealth drone presents a new strategic element for Western defense agencies, who will now be watching its progress with extreme interest.
