Aviation News – Scaled Composites’ Model 437 has resumed flight testing in Mojave, California, marking a key step toward Northrop Grumman’s Beacon autonomy flight campaign.
The September 20 relaunch follows extensive upgrades to the experimental aircraft, which first flew in 2024. Engineers modified the Model 437’s hydraulic systems, integrated autonomy subsystems, and added cockpit interfaces to prepare it as a testbed for advanced autonomous flight technology. The project represents a close collaboration between Scaled Composites and Northrop Grumman, both leaders in aerospace innovation.
The Model 437 is being used to validate the Beacon autonomy ecosystem, a software-driven system designed to enhance flight safety and performance in autonomous operations. The test campaign will expand the aircraft’s flight envelope, ensuring it can safely host autonomy demonstrations under a range of conditions.
“We had the challenge of taking an airplane that has only flown once and converting it into a versatile autonomous testbed,” said project engineer Yuto Shinagawa. “Great progress has been made toward realizing the Beacon autonomy ecosystem with the Model 437.”
Looking ahead, the tests will accelerate development of autonomous aviation by enabling rapid iteration and refinement of autonomy software. Success with the Model 437 could pave the way for future defense and commercial applications of Beacon technology.
By combining Scaled Composites’ expertise in rapid aircraft modification with Northrop Grumman’s autonomy research, the program signals a new phase in unmanned aviation.
