Aviation News – Air Cambodia Expands Fleet with Chinese-Made Regional Jets
Air Cambodia has signed a preliminary deal to acquire up to 20 Chinese-built C909 regional jets, marking a significant step in the flag carrier’s fleet expansion and signaling growing regional interest in China’s homegrown aircraft.
The memorandum of understanding was signed on Tuesday in China between Air Cambodia and the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). The agreement covers 10 confirmed C909 orders, with options for 10 more. The deal places Cambodia among Southeast Asian nations—including Indonesia, Vietnam, Laos, and Brunei—that have already turned to COMAC as the state-owned planemaker seeks to challenge industry giants Airbus and Boeing.
The C909 is a smaller regional jet designed to serve short- to medium-haul routes, making it suitable for Southeast Asia’s dense aviation markets. Its deployment is expected to increase operational efficiency for Air Cambodia, while providing COMAC with another foothold in the region as it pursues wider international sales.
“This agreement reflects our confidence in the C909’s ability to meet the needs of Cambodia’s fast-growing aviation sector,” a COMAC spokesperson said. “We are proud to support Air Cambodia as it strengthens its regional connectivity.”
For Air Cambodia, the new aircraft could enhance network coverage and support rising passenger demand across Southeast Asia. For COMAC, each order strengthens its bid to compete globally with Airbus and Boeing, whose single-aisle jets dominate the market.
The deal highlights Cambodia’s growing role in regional aviation expansion, while underscoring COMAC’s strategy of building trust in nearby markets before tackling long-haul competition. As deliveries progress, both sides will look to turn this memorandum into long-term cooperation that could reshape flight options in the region.
