Aviation News – Sweden has finalized an agreement to sell four Saab Gripen fighter jets to Thailand, marking a significant step in strengthening defense cooperation between the two nations. The deal enhances Thailand’s air defense capabilities and underscores Sweden’s role as a key supplier of advanced military aircraft.

The Swedish government confirmed the agreement on August 25, 2025, following negotiations that began earlier this year. Saab, the Swedish aerospace and defense company, will deliver the aircraft as part of Thailand’s ongoing military modernization program. The Gripen jets are known for their advanced avionics, multi-role flexibility, and cost-effective operation, making them a strategic choice for the Royal Thai Air Force.

Key Benefits:

Enhanced air defense and operational readiness for Thailand

Proven multi-role combat capabilities with modern avionics

Cost-efficient maintenance and operational lifecycle

Strengthened bilateral defense ties between Sweden and Thailand

The Gripen’s advanced radar systems, network-centric warfare capability, and interoperability with allied forces will significantly boost Thailand’s operational effectiveness. Designed for both air-to-air and air-to-ground missions, the aircraft combines agility with state-of-the-art systems, enabling rapid deployment in diverse mission scenarios.

“We are proud to support Thailand’s defense modernization with the Gripen, a fighter designed to deliver superior performance in today’s complex security environment,” said Lars Svensson, Senior Vice President at Saab. “This agreement reflects the trust in Swedish technology and our long-standing partnership with the Royal Thai Air Force.”

The delivery of the aircraft is scheduled to begin in 2026, with full operational capability expected by 2027. This deal signals Sweden’s continued commitment to supporting global partners in strengthening their defense infrastructure.

With this agreement, Sweden not only solidifies its reputation in the global defense market but also contributes to regional stability in Southeast Asia. The Gripen deal is expected to pave the way for future cooperation in defense technology and training.
