Throughout 2025, the RNLAF participated in multiple exercises across Europe. In April, Dutch F-35s joined the U.S. Air Force at NATO’s Ramstein Flag 2025, conducting fifth-generation interoperability missions and joint maintenance operations. In May, RNLAF F-35s performed highway take-offs and landings during Finland’s Baana 25 exercise, showcasing their ability to operate from dispersed locations under potential conflict conditions. The fleet also reached Full Operational Capability, assuming NATO nuclear deterrence duties previously held by the F-16.

Key highlights of the RNLAF’s F-35 operations:

Fifth-generation interoperability with U.S. and NATO forces.

Real-time data sharing enabling multi-domain operations.

Agile Combat Employment via highway operations in Finland.

Full Operational Capability, including NATO nuclear deterrence.

“By achieving Full Operational Capability and demonstrating our F-35s’ advanced capabilities across NATO exercises, we are ensuring the Netherlands is fully prepared to meet any future security challenge,” said a spokesperson for the Royal Netherlands Air Force.

Looking ahead, the Netherlands plans to expand its F-35 capabilities further, integrating new technologies and strengthening interoperability with allied forces. This commitment reinforces the nation’s status as a key contributor to NATO’s collective defense.

The Royal Netherlands Air Force’s 2025 activities reflect a significant step toward shaping the future of European air power, demonstrating not only readiness but also the strategic value of fifth-generation aircraft in modern warfare.
