Aviation News – Poland has chosen L3Harris Technologies to supply its Viper Shield™ electronic warfare system for the nation’s F-16 Viper fleet. The upgrade will significantly enhance the aircraft’s defensive and offensive capabilities, aligning Poland’s jets with modern combat standards.
The decision, announced on August 28, 2025, involves the acquisition of the AN/ALQ-254 Viper Shield through the U.S. government. The system will be integrated into Poland’s existing F-16 Block 52+ fighters, bringing them closer in capability to the advanced F-16 Block 70 model already in service with other U.S. allies.
Key Benefits of Viper Shield
- Strengthens aircraft survivability in contested airspace
- Provides advanced offensive and defensive electronic warfare protection
- Aligns Poland’s F-16s with the Block 70 configuration
- Enhances interoperability with allied air forces
Viper Shield functions as a next-generation electronic warfare suite, offering protection against modern threats by detecting, identifying, and countering hostile radar and missile systems. Its integration into Poland’s F-16s will increase mission effectiveness while improving long-term fleet resilience.
“This selection demonstrates Poland’s commitment to ensuring its F-16 fleet remains combat-ready against evolving threats,” said an L3Harris spokesperson. “Viper Shield will deliver the same advanced protection trusted by our closest allies.”
Looking forward, Poland’s adoption of Viper Shield underscores the nation’s broader defense modernization strategy and strengthens its role within NATO. The program is expected to expand interoperability, readiness, and deterrence capabilities across the region.
By securing the Viper Shield system, Poland not only enhances its immediate defense posture but also ensures its air force remains equipped with cutting-edge technology for future challenges.
