Aviation News – July 7, 2025 – In a significant move to modernize India’s aging military platforms, Reliance Defence has signed a strategic agreement with Coastal Mechanics Inc. (CMI), a U.S.-based defense contractor authorized by the Department of Defense. The partnership aims to jointly support India’s growing Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) requirements across various defense assets.

One of the most notable elements of the agreement is the upgrade and sustainment of over 100 Russian-origin MiG-29 fighter jets currently in service with the Indian Air Force. This collaboration is especially significant as it represents a rare instance where a U.S. defense contractor will play a direct role in the lifecycle extension of Russian-made fighter aircraft operated by a third-party country.

Valued at approximately ₹20,000 crore ($2.34 billion), the agreement also includes modernization and support for more than 100 Jaguar strike aircraft, Apache AH-64 attack helicopters used by the Indian Army, and L-70 air defense guns.

The initiative will be anchored by a dedicated joint venture facility at MIHAN (Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport at Nagpur), located in Maharashtra. This facility is expected to provide comprehensive MRO and upgrade services for both Indian and international defense platforms.

The partnership aligns with India’s strategic shift toward performance-based logistics (PBL)—a model that emphasizes targeted modernization and serviceability over full-scale replacement of legacy equipment. This reflects the country’s broader effort to enhance defense readiness while ensuring cost-effective lifecycle management of critical military assets.

This deal strengthens defense cooperation between India and the United States and underscores the growing role of international collaboration in sustaining diverse, legacy military systems.
