Koblenz, Germany – 06 June 2025 – Airbus has secured a new contract from the German Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) to equip 23 A400M aircraft operated by the German Air Force (Luftwaffe) with advanced infrared countermeasure systems. These systems, known as Directed Infrared Counter Measures (DIRCM), are designed to shield the aircraft from infrared-guided missile threats.

As part of the agreement, Airbus will not only integrate the DIRCM systems but will also deliver associated support services such as crew training, service bulletins, and specialized tooling.

Gerd Weber, Head of the A400M Programme at Airbus Defence and Space, emphasized the aircraft’s multifaceted role:

“The A400M represents the backbone of the German Air Force. It carries out diverse missions—transporting personnel and supplies, aerial refueling, and even serving as an airborne hospital for medical evacuations. Adding the DIRCM system enhances the safety of our crews and broadens the mission capabilities of this remarkable platform.”

The protection systems, developed by Elbit Systems, will be installed during routine maintenance at Airbus facilities in Manching (Germany), Getafe, and Seville (Spain). The 23 aircraft slated for the upgrade are configured for tactical missions, including operations in high-risk areas and medical evacuations. In comparison, A400M units configured for logistics focus on long-distance transport tasks, such as moving troops, heavy equipment, helicopters, or engineering machinery.

Currently, Airbus is testing the DIRCM technology on an A400M aircraft in Seville. Certification is expected by summer 2025. Full integration across all 23 aircraft is planned to be completed by 2032.
