Danish F-16 Fighters Deployed to Pituffik Space Base in Northwest Greenland

June 29 2025 – Two Danish F-16 fighter jets, accompanied by a Challenger aircraft, landed Friday at the U.S.-operated Pituffik Space Base in northwest Greenland as part of Denmark’s enhanced Arctic presence.

According to the Danish Defence Command, the visit served both operational and diplomatic purposes. The deployment aimed to gain experience with fighter jet operations in Arctic conditions, while also allowing the head of the Danish fighter aircraft division, Niels Andersen, to meet with leadership at the base. “I received a thorough briefing on the base’s operations and how they manage their tasks under the often harsh conditions posed by the Arctic environment and remote location,” Andersen said following the visit.

The aircraft remained at the base for approximately two hours before departing again. The flight to Pituffik, which originated from Arctic Command’s facility in Kangerlussuaq, was supported by a French Air Force MRTT (Multi Role Tanker Transport) aircraft. This aerial refueling capability ensures greater operational flexibility in Arctic regions, where long distances and unpredictable weather pose significant challenges. The French tanker also supported the Danish fighter jets during their transit from Denmark to Greenland and continues to operate alongside them throughout their Arctic deployment.
