Solar Impulse 2 makes forced Japan landing, due bad weather

Solar Impulse Project Solar Impulse S2 HB-SIB

Solar Impulse 2, the first attempt to fly around the world using just solar power, has been forced to make an impromptu stop in Japan due to bad weather. A developing cold front over the ocean is blocking its path and pilot Andre Borschberg has decided to play safe by putting down in Nagoya, Japan.

It began its 5,079-mile (8,174km) flight to Hawaii from Nanjing, China, early yesterday, but storms are said to have forced the plane to land in Nagoya.

The plane landed safely at 11:49pm local time (3:49pm BST).
