Saudi flight forced into emergency landing

DUBAI – A Saudi Arabian Airlines (Saudia) flight was forced to make an emergency landing in the southern Najran province after the pilot reported smoke in the cockpit, local daily Arab News reported on Monday.

The aircraft carrying 79 passengers and crew was around 20 minutes into its flight from Sharourah to the capital Riyadh on Sunday morning when the pilot detected smoke and turned back, the newspaper said.

All passengers and crew were disembarked safely, although one female passenger needed treatment for a “nervous breakdown”, Arab News said, citing a General Authority of Civil Aviation spokesman.

Saudia made alternative arrangements for passengers to continue their journey to Riyadh, the newspaper said.

Arab News did not say what was the cause of the smoke.
