Biman Bangladesh Airlines Prepares Landmark Multi-Billion-Dollar Fleet Agreement with Airbus

AviationNews – Biman Bangladesh Airlines is poised to finalize a massive acquisition of 10 modern aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus, marking a strategic shift in the national flag carrier’s long-term fleet evolution.

The multi-billion-dollar transaction, slated for signature in Dhaka, comprises four widebody A350-900s and six narrowbody A321neo jets. This landmark agreement will diversify Biman’s predominantly single-manufacturer profile and significantly boost its international connectivity.

The upcoming signing ceremony at a Dhaka hotel brings together key government and aviation figures, including civil aviation authorities and airline leadership. This development follows a series of extensive fleet adjustments by the carrier, running parallel to recent major commitments with Boeing. Combined with its existing procurement pipeline, Biman’s total planned fleet expansion reaches 35 new aircraft—consisting of 19 widebody and 16 narrowbody airframes—designed to modernize operations through the next decade.

Technically, the acquired aircraft serve distinct operational roles tailored to market demands. The four advanced A350-900 widebodies are earmarked for ambitious long-haul route expansions spanning Europe, North America, and the Middle East, while the six fuel-efficient A321neo narrowbodies will consolidate regional and medium-haul networks. Deliveries for this newly ordered Airbus contingent are projected to span from 2033 through 2037. Meanwhile, the airline is actively evaluating short-term lease options to bridge capacity gaps ahead of these future arrivals.

“This expansion plan has been carefully structured to align with our financial capacity, projected route revenues, and future market growth, ensuring it supports sustainable national development without straining public finances,” noted M. Rashiduzzaman Millat, Minister of Civil Aviation and Tourism.

Looking ahead, the integration of these advanced airframes positions Biman Bangladesh Airlines to capitalize on rising passenger volumes, amplified by infrastructure upgrades such as the modern third terminal at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka. As the airline diversifies its supplier base, it aims to secure a more competitive, resilient, and expansive global footprint.

Biman Bangladesh Airlines is setting the stage for a new era of global connectivity with its upcoming Airbus integration. Observers anticipate that these fleet enhancements will substantially strengthen the carrier’s competitive standing across South Asia and beyond.
