Aviation News – French President Emmanuel Macron announced official government support for the VORTEX spaceplane project during the International Space Summit in Paris today. Designed by prime contractor Dassault Aviation, the reusable spacecraft initiative aims to bolster European orbital capabilities across civil and military domains.
The endorsement marks a major political and strategic milestone for Dassault Aviation, which serves as the global architect and lead systems integrator for the aircraft. Development of the VORTEX program will proceed in close industrial partnership with German space systems company OHB, following a landmark agreement formalized between the two entities on May 11, 2026. A growing coalition of leading European aerospace firms—including APCO Technologies, MT Aerospace, Sener, Sonaca, and Space Cargo Unlimited—has also joined the industrial team to deliver the ambitious vehicle.
The VORTEX platform is engineered as a versatile, reusable orbital spaceplane capable of performing complex missions in low Earth orbit. Designed for dual-use applications, the platform will execute both civil and defense tasks, ranging from orbital experiment deployment to strategic cargo transport. By combining advanced aeronautical design with space system integration, the project creates an adaptable framework for routine space access and safe automated return to landing runways.
“This project, supported by France, should lead several countries – Germany and others – to join this ambition for mastering mobility in space,” stated Éric Trappier, Chairman and CEO of Dassault Aviation, emphasizing the strategic relevance of the national endorsement.
