Aviation News – A U.S. Coast Guard Gulfstream jet carrying Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin and 13 passengers made an emergency single-engine landing at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Wednesday afternoon following an in-flight engine failure.
The military aircraft diverted to the Virginia airport after losing power in its right engine during a flight transporting senior government officials from Georgia to Washington, D.C. Air traffic control safely routed the jet to an immediate touchdown at DCA, where emergency crews greeted the high-ranking delegation on the tarmac.
Federal authorities confirmed that the Gulfstream G550 carried 14 total passengers and crew members, including Secretary Markwayne Mullin. The specialized jet was en route to the nation’s capital on Wednesday afternoon when the mechanical failure forced the crew to alter their flight plan.
The crew contacted air traffic control mid-flight to declare a formal emergency, reporting that they had lost their right engine and required an immediate vector to the nearest suitable runway. Following a smooth approach and touchdown, Airports Authority Fire and Rescue teams inspected the jet directly on the runway to confirm there were no active fires or fluid leaks, ultimately reporting zero injuries.
