Aviation News – The U.S. Department of State has approved a possible $800 million Foreign Military Sale to Iraq covering Bell 412EPX and Bell 407M helicopters and associated equipment. The proposed package is intended to strengthen Iraq’s aviation capabilities, operational flexibility and support infrastructure.
The Government of Iraq has requested Bell 412EPX helicopters and Bell 407M helicopters, along with a broad range of weapons, sensors, communications equipment, spare parts and ground-support equipment. The U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency notified Congress of the possible sale following the State Department’s determination.
The package includes GAU-19 three-barrel machine gun launchers and M260 2.75-inch seven-tube rocket launchers, providing the helicopters with additional operational capabilities. Iraq has also requested L3 Wescam MX-15HDI electro-optical/infrared sensors, enabling crews to detect, identify and track targets using advanced day-and-night surveillance technology.
The proposed aircraft would be supported by AN/AAR-60 Block 2 Missile Launch Detection Systems, very-high-frequency radios, spare parts and peculiar ground support equipment. Together, these systems would improve the helicopters’ situational awareness, communications, survivability and availability for a range of missions.
The U.S. government said the proposed sale would support Iraq’s ability to conduct counterterrorism, border security, search-and-rescue and other security operations, while maintaining interoperability with U.S. and allied forces. The package also reflects continued U.S. support for developing Iraq’s aviation and security capabilities.
If completed, the $800 million agreement would represent a significant investment in Iraq’s rotary-wing fleet and associated infrastructure. The combination of new helicopters, sensors, weapons, communications systems and sustainment equipment could provide Iraq with a more capable and flexible aviation force for future security requirements.
The proposed sale would give Iraq access to new-generation Bell helicopters and advanced mission equipment, while strengthening long-term sustainment capabilities. Final quantities and the precise configuration of the package remain subject to the Foreign Military Sale process and congressional approval.
