A confidential police report cited by German outlets Süddeutsche Zeitung, WDR, and NDR revealed that the An-124 had recently delivered military munitions from France to Leipzig for onward shipment. An airport employee managed to force the drone to the ground before any blast occurred. Investigations confirmed the device carried a fist-sized package of Semtex plastic explosive and a detonator, which malfunctioned or detached, narrowly preventing a catastrophic explosion beside the heavily loaded aircraft.

Reconstructed surveillance footage revealed that the drone entered the southern perimeter of Leipzig/Halle Airport hours earlier without triggering the facility’s automated counter-drone detection systems. Security experts noted that the aircraft had been customized specifically to evade electronic countermeasures, allowing it to land on the apron undetected before re-emerging near the parked freighters. Federal police bomb disposal specialists quickly isolated the southern apron to neutralize the charge, while flight operations were temporarily suspended and incoming cargo flights were rerouted to neighboring airports.
