Aviation News – Italy has selected the Airbus A330 MRTT as its next-generation aerial refueling aircraft, signing a deal for six tankers to replace the Italian Air Force’s aging KC-767 fleet. The move marks a significant modernization step aimed at strengthening Italy’s long-range airpower and strategic mobility capabilities.
The procurement was revealed through the European Union’s Tenders Electronic Daily (TED) portal, which confirmed that Italy’s Ministry of Defense finalized the agreement with Airbus. The decision follows years of evaluating future tanker requirements as Italy seeks to align its air mobility assets with evolving NATO operational standards and broader European defense priorities. The current KC-767 fleet, introduced more than a decade ago, has served as the backbone of Italy’s air-to-air refueling operations.
The A330 MRTT is a proven multi-role platform capable of performing aerial refueling, strategic transport, and medical evacuation missions within a single airframe. Its larger fuel capacity, extended operational range, and ability to support multiple aircraft types will significantly improve Italy’s force projection capability, enabling longer deployments and greater mission flexibility.
