Aviation News – U.S. Army AH-64 Apache and U.S. Navy MH-60 Seahawk helicopters destroyed six Iranian small boats today after they were caught threatening commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz. The engagement follows reports from top military officials confirming a surge in Iranian attacks targeting both American warships and international merchant vessels in the region.
The clash occurred as part of a newly launched American initiative known as Project Freedom, an operation designed to safeguard the transit of commercial shipping through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Navy Adm. Brad Cooper, head of U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), confirmed the operation during a press conference on May 4, 2026, noting that the Iranian boats were eliminated as they actively harassed shipping lanes. This development comes amid a fragile ceasefire and follows a period of intense maritime conflict where the U.S. had previously targeted Iranian missile sites and minelayers.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical maritime chokepoints, through which a quarter of the world’s sea-based oil trade passes. The U.S. military has significantly increased its presence in the area, deploying a robust force that includes two carrier strike groups and over 100 land- and sea-based aircraft. Project Freedom was officially activated to escort and protect “neutral” ships that have been stranded or blocked by Iranian naval forces since earlier this year.
