AviationNews – General Atomics AeroTec Systems (GA-ATS) successfully completed the maiden flight of its Do228 NXT demonstrator aircraft on May 2, 2026. This milestone marks the official return of the legendary German multi-role turboprop to the skies, modernized to meet the rigorous demands of contemporary global missions.
The flight took place at the company’s facility in Oberpfaffenhofen, nearly 45 years after the original Dornier 228 first captured the industry’s attention. Since the General Atomics Group acquired the site five years ago, the team has worked to establish a brand-new production line, integrate a fresh network of suppliers, and restart series production. This demonstrator flight serves as the culmination of that industrial restructuring, proving that the updated aircraft production infrastructure in Germany is fully operational and ready for the future.
Technically, the Do228 NXT acts as a versatile workhorse, refined to handle specialized operations across various altitudes and speeds. The aircraft’s design focuses on high reliability and versatile missions, offering an updated operational impact that balances the platform’s historic STOL (Short Take-Off and Landing) capabilities with modern avionics and flight characteristics. Over the next few weeks, the team will execute a series of rigorous test flights to gather performance data and validate the aircraft’s behavior in diverse operational scenarios, ranging from high-speed patterns to complex landings.
“Taking the Do228 NXT into the air for the first time was an extraordinary experience,” said Martina Hierle, Test Pilot and Program Manager at GA-ATS. “The aircraft performed flawlessly. You can immediately sense what this aircraft is capable of and that the Do228 NXT is ready for demanding missions around the world.”
The Do228 NXT is now preparing for a major global tour, with its official public debut scheduled for ILA 2026 in Berlin this June. Following its home-country premiere, the aircraft will head to the Farnborough Airshow in the United Kingdom in late July to attract international buyers. Potential operators and defense partners are encouraged to engage with the GA-ATS team during these events to witness the aircraft’s modernized features firsthand.
The successful debut of the Do228 NXT signifies a major revival for German aviation and a strategic win for General Atomics. As the testing phase concludes, the aircraft is well-positioned to become a premier choice for global utility and surveillance sectors through the end of the decade.
