Aviation News – The Hungarian Defence Forces have officially received two new Gripen C fighter jets at the Kecskemét Air Base, marking the first delivery in a strategic expansion of the nation’s supersonic fleet. This arrival reinforces Hungary’s regional air sovereignty and fulfills the initial phase of a bilateral agreement aimed at modernizing the country’s aerial combat capabilities.

The delivery stems from a pivotal contract signed in February 2024 between the Hungarian Ministry of Defence and the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV). These two aircraft represent the first half of a four-plane order intended to bolster the existing 101st Aviation Wing. This expansion builds upon a long-standing partnership, as Hungary has successfully operated the Gripen platform since 2006 to meet its NATO obligations.

Upon the completion of this latest acquisition, Hungary will field a total of 18 Gripen C/D aircraft, all featuring the latest hardware and software upgrades. The development context is further strengthened by Saab’s commitment to establishing an Aviation Development Centre within Hungary. This center will serve as a hub for local expertise, ensuring that the Hungarian military remains an active participant in the ongoing evolution of the Gripen system rather than just an end-user.
