The Fuerza Aérea del Perú (FAP) has officially entered a new era of aerial superiority by signing a contract for the purchase of twelve Lockheed Martin F-16C/D Block 70 Fighting Falcons. This landmark agreement, finalized on 21 April 2026, represents a critical step in modernizing the nation’s aging fighter fleet to meet contemporary security challenges.
The initial phase of the contract is valued at USD 2.0 billion, which covers ten single-seat and two dual-seat aircraft, along with a comprehensive support package. This package includes ground support equipment, spare parts, and intensive pilot training. Notably, the deal also features the delivery of a KC-135R tanker at no additional cost, significantly enhancing the FAP’s operational range and endurance.
This procurement follows a rigorous selection process aimed at replacing legacy platforms with state-of-the-art technology. The agreement includes a strategic option for Phase 2, allowing Peru to acquire an additional dozen F-16s for USD 1.5 billion under the same favorable terms. This phased approach ensures a sustainable fiscal path for the country while doubling its projected frontline combat strength.
The Block 70 variant is the most advanced production version of the F-16, featuring the APG-83 AESA radar and enhanced avionics that provide unparalleled situational awareness. These technical upgrades allow for seamless integration with allied forces and ensure the aircraft can perform multi-role missions in high-threat environments with superior reliability.
Looking ahead, the arrival of these fighters will drastically shift the balance of power in South American aviation, providing Peru with a sophisticated deterrent capability. The government is expected to trigger the second phase of the contract as infrastructure upgrades are completed. Citizens and defense analysts can expect the first deliveries to trigger a comprehensive overhaul of national air defense protocols.
