Aviation News – India is preparing to begin formal discussions with Russia this week on acquiring next-generation fighter jets and an advanced missile defense system, a move that signals deeper defense alignment between the two countries.
India and Russia, bound by a longstanding Special and Privileged Strategic Partnership, are expected to explore potential purchases of Russia’s Su-57 stealth fighter and the S-500 missile defense shield, according to information shared with Bloomberg and sourced from officials familiar with the plans. The talks are scheduled to coincide with President Vladimir Putin’s visit, underscoring the geopolitical and defense significance of the timing.
The Su-57, Russia’s premier fifth-generation fighter, is designed for stealth, agility, and long-range capability. The S-500 system, considered an improvement over the S-400 already operated by India, is engineered to intercept ballistic and hypersonic threats. Together, the systems would offer India a major upgrade in air combat and air-defense strength.
