Aviation News – Sikorsky, a Lockheed Martin company, has introduced the Nomad 100 fast pack, a containerized vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) uncrewed aerial system (UAS) kit engineered to rapidly deploy autonomous air power in remote, infrastructure-limited environments. The mobile platform addresses a critical U.S. Armed Forces requirement for compact, low-footprint systems that can be swiftly fielded and repositioned in contested operational theaters.

The entire deployment system is self-contained within a single 20-foot ISO shipping container. Packed inside are four Nomad 100 autonomous aircraft alongside mission-command software, integrated power systems, secure communications, and sustainment equipment. Lockheed Martin’s Sikorsky division unveiled the solution to provide armed forces with immediate runway-independent air capabilities from improvised landing zones, tactical staging areas, or naval vessels.

Engineered for rapid mobility, the system significantly reduces ground footprint and external support requirements. Operators can unpack and prepare two Nomad 100 aircraft for flight in under 15 minutes, with the remaining two drones operational within four to six hours. Once a mission concludes, personnel can swiftly repack the container onto compatible military transport vehicles and relocate to support follow-on missions elsewhere.

The Nomad 100 aircraft combines fixed-wing speed and range with helicopter-like vertical takeoff and landing flexibility. Integrated power units and specialized command software allow units to execute prolonged autonomous reconnaissance, logistics, or tactical missions without relying on established airfields or extensive ground crews. Built-in communications links ensure continuous operational control across dispersed forces.

“The fast pack delivers rapid expansion of autonomous platforms through a compact, low-footprint solution designed to be deployed, sustained, and repositioned quickly in contested environments,” stated company representatives regarding the launch.

As defense priorities shift toward distributed operations in austere environments, containerized aerial systems represent the future of expeditionary warfare. Defense analysts expect units to adopt similar modular hardware packages to maintain flexible, low-risk aerial presence across unpredictable operational domains.
