Aviation News – A Jet2 Boeing 737-800 veered off the runway during landing at Birmingham Airport (BHX) in strong winds, forcing the aircraft’s left main landing gear onto the grass. The pilots regained control, returned the aircraft to the runway and taxied onto a taxiway, where it stopped.
The incident and recovery
The aircraft was operating Jet2 flight LS1310 and landing on runway 33 at Birmingham Airport when it veered to the left shortly after touchdown. The aircraft’s left main landing gear left the paved surface and rolled onto the grass alongside the runway.
The pilots managed to steer the aircraft back onto the runway before vacating onto a taxiway. The aircraft subsequently came to a stop, allowing the situation to be assessed before it returned to the terminal area.
Strong winds and runway excursion
Strong winds were present during the landing, providing important context for the runway excursion. Crosswinds and gusty conditions can make it more difficult for pilots to maintain directional control during the critical transition from flight to ground operations. However, the precise cause of the incident has not been established.
